The Dell PowerVault ME512 adds 12 x 3.5-inch drive bays to a PowerVault ME5 storage system over a 12 Gb SAS expansion protocol. Capacity is added without replacing controllers: the enclosure appears to the array as additional drive bays, and drives can be mixed with the existing tiers of the base system. Can only be used with ME5212 or ME5224 base arrays. Up to 9 x 2U expansion enclosures per 2U base array.
