Define the service level first
An enterprise storage purchase should begin with workload and recovery objectives. Document usable capacity today, expected annual growth, read/write profile, latency target, throughput, concurrency, availability, backup window and recovery objectives. Raw capacity alone does not describe a usable production system.
Block, file, object and data protection
Block storage commonly serves databases and virtualization; file services support shared directories and engineering workloads; object storage fits large unstructured datasets and cloud-native applications. Backup appliances and tape systems solve a different problem: recovery, retention and cyber resilience. Many environments need more than one tier.
All-flash or hybrid capacity
All-flash arrays offer predictable latency and high IOPS, while capacity-oriented flash or hybrid systems may lower cost per usable terabyte. Compare systems using realistic usable capacity after protection, spares, snapshots and expected data reduction—not a headline ratio alone. Data reduction depends heavily on dataset characteristics.
Connectivity and compatibility checklist
- Host protocol: Fibre Channel, iSCSI, NVMe/TCP, NFS, SMB or another supported protocol.
- Port speed, switch compatibility, optics, transceivers and cable type.
- Hypervisor, operating-system and multipathing support matrix.
- Drive type, endurance, encryption and spare strategy.
- Replication target, snapshot policy and backup integration.
- Rack space, power, cooling and expansion-shelf cabling.
Availability, support and lifecycle
Confirm controller redundancy, non-disruptive maintenance expectations, replication topology, support response level and software entitlement. Also check the platform lifecycle and expansion plan. A lower initial price can become expensive if capacity upgrades require disruptive migration or unavailable drive packs.
What to send a supplier
Provide current and three-year usable capacity, workload profile, protocol, host count, port speed, availability target, rack location, destination and preferred support term. For an expansion, include controller model, serial or system ID, software release, installed shelves and drive part numbers.
